Locust Point is a neighborhood in South Baltimore across the bay from Fells Point (to those familiar with the city). It’s an incredible little neighborhood, of which I’ve spent a lot of time enjoying, analyzing, and and using for various projects. It’s got a little bit of everything - classic Baltimore rowhosues inhabited by both old-age life-long residents and first time home-owning families, shipping docks (see Season 5 of The Wire), train stations running into industrial factories (see Domino Sugar), large public parks, the star-shaped Fort McHenry (see National Anthem), bars, a McDonalds, a business park, the list goes on. It’s no doubt one of the more diverse areas in Baltimore (and really in most cities).

I’ve worked in Locust Point. I’ve shot a video in Locust Point. I’ve done a photo series based on spending 24 hours flaneuring around Locust Point (top hat and all). I’ve documented all the human-grown plant life in every residential house in Locust Point. And who knows, maybe all these connections to this area make it the “right” place to shoot the east coast side of the project.

I don’t have access to most of these projects here (from work), but I will update with some ground-level documentation of Locust Point later on.

One of my hesitations of using Locust Point is that it feels too obvious to go there. I've turned ideas into projects in that neighborhood enough time, and maybe it's time to move on, exploit somewhere else. None-the-less, it's a serious competetor, for it's no easy task to find a location that combines so much Baltimore in so little of an area.

Ocean Beach may be an obvious choice for any of you that live in or are familiar with San Francisco. It’s probably the most well known beach here. I still feel that it’s relevant however and could be a great location. here’s some reasons why:

Proximity to my studio: Pretty much a “hop skip & jump” away from me. could get there in just a few minutes via moped, train, car, or bike.

Charming beachfront architecture: The Outer Sunset neighborhood gets bashed by everyone, including me, for its cold temperatures and tedious commute into the downtown area. The truth is this area has tons of character and an “easy livin’” feeling in the air. Although the main photo shoot will be on the beach, the thought of possible photo ops of riding through these streets in foggy orange sunlight with big foam letters strapped to our scooters sounds totally awesome.

Very “West Coast”: Sand, Surfers, Babes (in fleece), jellyfish. There’s some rocky offshore bluffs with seals and pelicans in the distance.

The first time I went to North Point was by chance. About three years ago, in a search for some seaside nature relaxation therapy (or whatever), a friend/collaborator and myself decided to pull out a Baltimore area map and make a guess for the best place to see the ocean. It certainly was an incredible surprise.

North Point is surrounded by a state park, making the drive to the water one of winding wooded roads and your standard state park activities - volleyball, grilling, lounging, et cetra. From the water, you can see the other side of the bay in the distance, and the Bay Bridge, which connects the two sides.

Much of the shoreline is made up rubble debris from the city - pieces of charred buildings from the Baltimore Fire of 1904 and bricks smoothed over from years of tides. Parts of North Point are almost eerie in the way, like a strange Baltimore ghost town, or even just the remnants from the ghost town.

But I don’t mean to give the wrong impression, North Point also has it’s more lively areas. A pier that juts out into the bay about a third of mile can often be seen packed with South Ameircan fishers. Whole familites relaxing for the day on the rocks of the piers casually reel in fish throughout the day.

The past two days have been spent getting things ready online and finalizing decisions. As you may notice, our web badges located at the top of the page are now live and ready. As a group we have also come to an agreement with what we’re going to be doing.

As some of you may or may not know, the members of Neon Gray reside in both San Francisco and Baltimore, separated by the fat middle section of the United States. While we are able to work together well via the Internet where location should be of no great importance, we still sometimes experience the frustrations of being so far away from each other and having to rely on virtual space - the time difference, Internet that craps out when group video chatting, differing monitor calibrations, etc. The biggest annoyance, however, has been simply not having the other person there when you need them to offer some quick advice, a shoulder to cry on, or a “that’s what she said” joke to lighten the mood.

This physical separation is always on our minds, and, for some reason, it’s totally mesmerizing. Previous to today’s technological world, a design studio that has an entire country as it’s conference table would never have been able to exist, at least not very easily. So we decided to base this project around that idea. We’re going to take advantage of our disadvantages of being separated. Because we don’t have any one physical location where we could show our work or hold our event for YCN Live, we decided that we would make use of all of the places that represent where we are and how we collaborate - the internet, San Francisco, Baltimore, and everything in between.

Neon Gray has always claimed the title of “bi-coastal multidisciplinary design kinship.” Both of our studios exist on an actual edge of the United states; It’s not hard for either of us to walk out of the door, get on a moped, and drive a few minutes to go and take a step off of the country and into some water (the Pacific & Atlantic oceans). So… that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Here’s what’s going to happen. Over the next day or two we are going to work together to design a word. Right now we are planning on using the word “coast.” After the design is said and done, I’m going to cut the word out of low density recyclable foam using a large format CNC hot-wire cutter (geek talk). These letters will then be taken to a picturesque West Coast location, set up, and photographed. Immediately after the photo-shoot, the letters will be packaged up and shipped Eastward to Baltimore. Here they will also be taken to a beach location and photographed. We will then gather all of the photos, perform some post production magic, and (hopefully) call the project a success.

Again, keep in mind the “live” aspects of this project. During all of this work, we’re going to keep you updated with photos, blog posts, tweets, geodata, and even tracking info when the letters are on their way to the East coast. So you’ll pretty much always know whats going on, and how much we’re slacking. Thanks web 2.0 and social networking!

Alright so, I’m just going to talk a bit more about this project as im sure some of you might be scratching your heads at the previous vagueness. We (the members of Neon Gray) will be completing a project live on the internet in participation with YCN Live. You got that before. The reason things have been rather vague is because we are actually doing this as you see it. Decisions are being made and complications are being solved right now. This is live, so more information will be made available as we figure it out for ourselves. Think of it as hiding out in our studios for two weeks while we diligently slave away. Throughout this process, our blog will act as our centralized space where live text, photos, and tracking information will be regularly posted to monitor the progress of the project and show you guys how Neon Gray works.
